1989 Gold Half Sovereign '500th Anniversary of the Sovereign Coin' NGC PF-69

The 1989 Half Gold Sovereign '500th Anniversary of the Sovereign Coin' commemorates the five hundred years since the introduction of the first modern sovereign in 1489 under King Henry VII's reign.

These coins showcase the unique Coronation obverse and Tudor Rose reverse designs created by Bernard Sindall. Each coin has received a numismatic grade of PF-69 and earned the ULTRA-CAMEO designation, indicating the high degree of frost present on the design elements, as assessed by the NGC.

500th Anniversary of the Gold Sovereign

This sovereign features the first sovereign reverse redesign in Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

When the 1989 sovereigns were originally issued, they were not universally popular, and the Royal Mint failed to sell out of its entire issue limit. We believe this was because the coin was different, and many people expect and want the familiar St. George and Dragon design.

Also, the Mint has made one-off design sovereigns in 20022012, and 2017, all of which have been popular. These special issues may have contributed to the increased interest in the 1989.

Bernard Sindall

Bernard Sindall designed the reverse and obverse of this coin. The original sovereigns were intended to be used as a symbol of Britain's importance and wealth, to impress the rest of Europe.

Obverse

The obverse features a representation of Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation. She is seated facing on a throne and is holding the Sceptre with the Cross and the Rod with the Dove. The legend reads:

ELIZABETH II • DEI • GRA • REG • FID • DEF

Reverse

The reverse of the 1989 Elizabeth II half sovereign mirrors its 500-year-old original counterpart. The Royal Arms shield is surmounted by the royal crown, both images are superimposed upon a double Tudor rose. The inscription reads:

1489-1989 ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN
