The modern sovereign was introduced in 1817 as a circulation coin with a nominal value of one pound. This popular coin was used in coinage until the middle of the First World War in Britain and until the early1930's in countries such as Australia and South Africa. When Britain abandoned the Gold Standard in 1931 demand for the sovereign declined. During the period between 1932 to 1956, sovereigns were only issued as coronation sets (a set was produced for Edward VIII who abdicated before his coronation, only one complete set is known to exist).

Sovereigns were re-introduced by The Royal Mint in 1957 to meet demand for gold bullion. Sought after by investors for their low premiums and coin collectors for their numismatic interest, the sovereign is one of the most popular gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other special occasions.
