More Info

In 1906, the Royal Mint in London and the Australia mints in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth all issued Edward VII gold sovereigns. The sovereign was used in circulation as a one pound coin in the UK until the First World War. During the war, the government called for people to swap their sovereigns for treasury notes. Many sovereigns were melted down to pay for the country's debt to America.
