Gold sovereigns were issued from 1902 to 1910 for Edward VII. The 1904 London mint sovereign bears George William De Saulles' effigy of the king on the obverse and Benedetto Pistrucci's famous St George and the dragon design on the reverse.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
In 1904, The Royal Mint in London, and the Australian mints in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, all issued sovereigns. You can visit our Mints & Mintmarks page for further information. 1904 was the third year of Edward VII's coinage. Sovereigns were circulated as pound coins until the World War I so Edward VII sovereigns often tend to be quite worn. Many people put aside a few shiny new coins from the first year of a reign, but not as many of subsequent years get saved. This sometimes makes the them more difficult to find in higher grades.
The obverse of this 22 carat gold coin features a portrait of Edward VII. This right facing effigy was created by George William De Saulles, his initials, DeS, appear below the truncation. The inscription reads:
"EDWARDVS VII D:G:BRITT:OMN:REX:F:D:IND:IMP:"
Benedetto Pistrucci's famous engraving of St George and the dragon is the design used on the reverse of the 1904 Edward VII gold sovereign. No mintmark can be seen on the exergue line which indicates that this is coin was produced by the Royal Mint in London.
