This 1897 Queen Victoria veiled head sovereign struck in 22 carat gold was minted in Melbourne, Australia. This circulated gold coin features the iconic St George and the Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci.

In 1897, sovereigns were minted by the Royal Mint overseas branches in Sydney and Melbourne mints in Australia. No London or Perth mint sovereigns exist for this date. A total of 7,662,565 gold sovereigns were struck for circulation in 1897, the Melbourne mint issued 5,130,565.
The coin features the veiled head portrait of Queen Victoria and the inscription VICTORIA·DEI·GRA·BRITT·REGINA·FID·IND·IMP. This was designed by the engraver, Sir Thomas Brock KCB RA. Brock also designed the Victoria memorial, which can be found outside Buckingham Palace.
The reverse of this 1897 British sovereign features the St George and the Dragon engraving by Benedetto Pistrucci. The 'M' for Melbourne mint mark can be found on the ground below the dragon.
