Only 4,512,454 shield sovereigns were minted in 1880 at the Melbourne and Sydney mints, of which 1,459,000 were struck in Sydney. None were issued by The Royal Mint in London. These British coins were issued for circulaion with a nominal value of one pound.
There is also a 1880 error sovereign struck by the Sydney mint. On this coin the V in VICTORIA is an upside down letter A as ∀ICTORIA
In the same year, sovereigns with the St George and Dragon reverse were issued by all three mints and include a number of small varitions such as overdates, long, medium and short tails and differences in the size of the B.P. initials or absence of them altogether.
* These mintage figures combine the two reverse types as we are unable to find mintage figures for the shield reverse alone.

The obverse shows the right facing Young Head bust of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Mint. This portrait is the Third Young Head due to a slightly different arrangement of the hair, not as many strands hang down and the nose is slightly more aqualine compared to the First Young Head. The date can be seen below the bust and the initials W.W. are in relief in the truncated neck. The coin bears the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA
The reverse features the engraving of Jean Baptiste Merlen's crowned shield design. The shield is set within a wreath which is tied with a ribbon bow. The mint mark S is shown towards the bottom of the coin, above the floral emblem shows that the coin was minted for circulation in Sydney, Australia. The inscription reads BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF:
