1878 Victoria Young Head sovereign struck in 22 carat gold. This 1878 British sovereign was issued for circulation by the Sydney mint, Australia.

The only mint which issued shield sovereigns in 1878 was Sydney which produced 1,259,000 coins for circulation with a face value of one pound.
Both the Melbourne and Sydney mints issued 1878 dated sovereigns with the St George and Dragon reverse design. The London Mint issued no sovereigns of any type dated 1878.
The obverse bears the third Young Head effigy of Queen Victoria designed by William Wyon. His initials W.W. are set in relief in the truncation.The coin features the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA with the date below the portrait.
The reverse features the crowned shield engraving by Jean Baptiste Merlen. The shield is surrounded on both sides by a wreath which has been tied at the base. The S mint mark below the wreath denotes that the coin was minted in Sydney, Australia. The sovereign reverse features the legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF:

Any coin sold for a value less than a 180% intrinsic is considered a bullion coin.
