These 1872 Gold Sovereign Victoria Young Head St George Melbourne Mint Coins display the young head portrait of Queen Victoria by William Wyon on the obverse. The reverse of the coin features the St George and Dragon design.
Struck in 22 carat gold / 0.9167 fineness and is graded on both the obverse and reverse.
This sovereign is a scarce coin and is sought-after by many investors in any grade. It is the rarest sovereign of the Young Head St George Melbourne sovereigns. The reason that this coin is rare is due to the total mintage for this sovereign only being 748,180 which includes both the Shield and St. George reverse types.
Additionally, this sovereign coin was the first to be minted by the Melbourne mint in 1872 when it officially opened its doors on the 6th of June 1872.
See Our 1872 Gold Sovereign Collection.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
In 1872, the shield reverse sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint in London and the Australian branch mints in Melbourne and Sydney. The St George and Dragon sovereign was also issued in 1872. These circulation coins are struck in 22 carat gold and have a nominal value of one pound.
