In 1848 two varieties of shield sovereigns were struck. The first type, series 1, were issued from 1838 to 1848 and has a smaller head in higher relief. The second type, series 2, were issued from 1848 to 1872, with a few gaps; this variation has a slightly larger head, in lower relief, and the reverse legends are repositioned. A total of 2,246,701 of both types of the 1847 Victoria young head portrait sovereigns were minted in London.

The obverse was designed by Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, William Wyon. It features the first (small) young head portrait of Queen Victoria as she looked when she ascended to the throne at just 18 years old. Facing left, this effigy shows Victoria's hair bound by two plain fillets and gracefully gathered into a loose knot. The engraver's initials, W.W. are in relief in the truncation and the date appears under the bust.
The reverse of the 1848 type 1 sovereign was designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen, engraver at the Royal Mint. It features the shield design which depicts the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom. This is surmounted by the royal crown and is flanked on each side by a branch of laurel leaves. The laurel branches are tied with a bow below the shield. At the base of the bow is the united rose, shamrock and thistle with flower stops on either side of the arrangement.
